Launched in 2022, TOHNAI is the eponymous brand of Hiroshi Tohnai, a designer known within the industry as a "material geek" for his relentless exploration of the fabrics and yarns that constitute clothing. After graduating from Bunka Fashion College, Tohnai began his career at Y's for living, then spent seven years steering the planning, design, and material development of MARGARET HOWELL and MHL., before serving as director of WISLOM and founding his own design office. Working hand in hand with skilled Japanese ateliers, TOHNAI produces its garments in small, fully integrated runs, from planning through cutting, sewing, and finishing. The brand pursues an experimental approach that deliberately breaks convention, revealing an imperfect beauty born of intentional distortion. Each piece is conceived like a ceramic work, where even wrinkles and warps become beautiful, resulting in clothing designed to remain in your closet for ten or twenty years as a quiet statement of material integrity and everyday elegance.
